What style of fireplace will suit my home?

For most people the fire and fireplace is the focal point of their sitting room.  That’s why it is so important to get it right when it comes to finding the perfect fire.  Here at Manchester’s premium fire and fireplace showroom our experts are often asked to advise people from all over the North West on choosing the right design.

There are some practical considerations to consider when choosing a fire. First, you need to consider the type of chimney your property has, as this will dictate the type of fire you can have.   You should also consider the size of the room as this will help you decide on heat output required and of course, you need to think about whether you want a gas, electric of multi fuel appliance.

For the purpose of this blog however, we will be focusing purely on the aesthetics and the design element.

PERIOD HOME

Here in Greater Manchester we are fortunate to have many beautiful period homes from the Regency, Victorian and Edwardian period.  If possible, it’s always nice to have a fireplace from the same period although unfortunately, many delightful pieces have not just been covered up but ripped out entirely.

If you can’t have a genuine original fireplace don’t worry as there are numerous period style new designs available.  We think this stunning Gallery Asquith fireplace surround is ideal for a Regency or Georgian property.  Homeowners of that period selected marble or stone surrounds and this 100% limestone fireplace is stunning.   The neutral colour makes it the perfect complement to a period feature wall as does the 14055 mm mantelshelf and the proud symmetrical legs running down either side of the fire.  These clean lines make it ideal to dress and decorate around especially at Christmas.

In this image, the fire itself is the Gallery Crown cast iron insert.  Again, perfect for a period home thanks to its classic arch design which is available in either a matt black or silver/pewter finish.  Better still, this fireplace is compatible with either a gas, electric or solid fuel fire.

CONTEMPORARY HOME

If your preferred interior design style is contemporary then you will love this Kinder Eden Elite fire.  The slim Eden Elite is ideal if you have a small room as its hole-in-the-wall design won’t take up any valuable floor space.  However, it is flexible enough to be fitted into a custom fireplace with natural stone slips around it, or in the chimney breast it can be purchased with a brushed steel trim or without.

This gas fire comes with a lovely log fuel effect bed and a choice of a black or cream interior which is operated with an automatic and thermostatic remote control.   The Eden Elite may be small but it packs a punch with its 4.9kW heat output and you can really enjoy the dancing flames through the anti-reflective glass.

This fire would look best with an interior that features black, white and grey with chrome accessories.  The room should not be overdressed although you can add warmth with a shaggy rug in a bold colour.

COUNTRY HOME

You don’t have to live out in the sticks to enjoy the atmosphere of a country styled interior.  If you love rustic chic then the must-have focal point has to be the archetypical stove.  We recommend the ACR Rowandale multi-fuel stove which benefits from that much-loved classic design with modern ‘widescreen’ viewing window.

This stove also boats a powerful air wash which keeps that viewing window nice and clean and as well as the classic matt black, the stove also comes in buttermilk, gloss black or majolica brown.  Better still, this stove is DEFRA approved which means you can burn wood even if you live in a smoke controlled area.   Fit as a stand-alone feature or within a fireplace mantel or with a beam.

Your room should have a hard floor, wood, tiled, stone or slate and some comfortable sofa’s complete with throws should be arranged around the wood burner.  This interior style should be all about creating a cosy ambiance and so a basket of logs, a sheepskin rug, and some soft lighting will add to the mood.
